San Diego (June 24, 1998) TECH CORPS
is pleased to announce the TECH CORPS
'98 Leadership in the Classroom awards presented to four outstanding K-12
educators. These educators have successfully integrated technology into
their classrooms enhancing students' education and, in some cases, changing
their lives.
Award recipients were selected by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), a national leader in supporting teachers and technology. The ISTE judges have extensive experience in evaluating teachers' implementation of technology in the classroom. Teachers were evaluated based on their exemplary, creative, innovative and broadly infused use of technology as well as their leadership in mentoring other teachers.
"TECH CORPS is pleased to recognize the outstanding efforts of these individuals who have improved education by creatively using technology in their classrooms" said Karen Smith, Executive Director of TECH CORPS.
Award Recipients
These award-winning educators have enhanced student performance by incorporating technology into many subject areas, and expanding technology in K-12 schools within their communities.Terry Bailey, Pinkerton Academy, New Hampshire. His Visual Basic premiered in 96-97 as a single class and now requires five classes to accommodate a growing number of interested students.
Lindy Bingham, Conroe High School, Texas. Lindy recognized the value of technology in education fifteen years ago when a computer was installed in her classroom, and she has been actively incorporating technology ever since.
Bill Lee, Winifred Public School, Montana. His goal of using technology in everyday learning has been realized. Within two years, he transformed a sixth-grade, single-computer classroom into a technology-rich environment.
Peter Wholihan, Sts. Peter and Paul School, Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands. His passion to make it happen against all odds, even hurricanes, has given the students and teachers of Sts. Peter and Paul one of the best K-12 educational technology environments in the Caribbean.
Industry Honors the Teachers
TECH CORPS has partnered with industry leaders to advance the use of technology in schools. In support of TECH CORPS' goals, the following have come forward with equipment awards to help these educators further their mission. Each teacher will receive:- a HiNote laptop computer system donated by Digital Equipment Corporation;
- a camera and scanner from the Polaroid Corporation;
- a Micro Webserver from Cisco Systems; and
- a year of Internet access from MCI.
About TECH CORPS
TECH CORPS is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing K-12 teaching and learning through volunteers who help integrate technology into the educational environment. TECH CORPS volunteers offer technical expertise in hardware/software/wiring, mentor students and teachers, work side-by-side with teachers in the classroom, deliver teacher training, and offer advice on technology and network planning.
